California is an expensive state to live in, and eviction can be a difficult process for landlords and tenants alike. Here are five steps you should take when dealing with the eviction process in California, and a list of resources to help you out.

Step 1: Serve a 3-day notice

The first step in the eviction process is serving a 3-day notice. This notice must be in writing and must be served to the tenant or posted to the premises. The notice must include the amount of rent owed and the date by which it must be paid.

Step 2: File an Unlawful Detainer

If the rent is not paid within the 3-day period, the landlord can file an Unlawful Detainer in court. This is the legal document that begins the eviction process.

Step 3: Serve the Summons and Complaint

The landlord must then serve the tenant with a Summons and Complaint. This must be done within 5 days of filing the Unlawful Detainer.

Step 4: Tenant Response

The tenant then has 5 days to respond to the Summons and Complaint. The tenant can respond by denying the claims or admitting the claims and offering to pay the rent within a certain period of time.

Step 5: Judgment

The court will then issue a judgment in favor of the landlord if the tenant does not respond. The court will issue an order for the tenant to vacate the premises.
